Israeli uneasiness prompts withdrawal of draft document

Reacting to Israeli objections, the US State Department has withdrawn a draft of a UN resolution based on agreements reached at this week's Annapolis conference, Reuters reports. Israeli diplomats apparently were dismayed that the US did not consult them before putting the resolution to the Security Council yesterday, and involving the UN in the peace process may have made them uncomfortable.

Moreover, though the Israelis considered the conference a success, they found a US resolution endorsing the creation of a Palestinian state before 2009 too strong. "We feel that the appreciation of the council has other means of being represented and reflected than resolutions," said an Israeli UN rep. An oral summary of the feeling of the meeting replaced the resolution. (More Middle East stories.)
