Frustrated by the lack of progress in fighting climate change? Researchers suggest we should consider re-engineering human beings rather than trying to reverse climate change directly, LiveScience reports. "We might not be entirely serious that people should be doing this," says Anders Sandberg, an author of a study coming out in Ethics, Policy and the Environment. "What we are arguing is we should be taking a look at this, at the very least." Among their ideas:

  • Use bioengineering to make people intolerant to red meat. That should reduce livestock farming and the greenhouse gas emissions that go with it.
  • Make people smaller, so we consume less energy. Experts can do it by picking smaller embryos during preimplantation genetic diagnosis, a technique already employed in screening for diseases.
  • Use education, electrical stimulation, and drugs to make people smarter—because smarter people seem to have lower birthrates.
Sandberg notes that people will say, "'I think it's horrible people take pills to become smarter,' but they are saying it over coffee"—which makes us all more alert through the magic of caffeine. See more of their ideas here. (More climate change stories.)
