Republican Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire has been taking flak for her vote against stronger background checks, especially because she was the only East Coast senator north of Virginia to do so. Today, at her first town hall meeting since that vote, Ayotte got an earful from the daughter of Sandy Hook principal Dawn Hochsprung, reports NBC News.

  • “You had mentioned that day the burden on owners of gun stores that the expanded background checks would cost," said Erica Lafferty. "I am just wondering why the burden of my mother being gunned down in the halls of her elementary school isn’t as important as that."

“Erica, I, certainly let me just say, that I’m obviously so sorry,” Ayotte replied. “And, I think that ultimately when we look at what happened in Sandy Hook, I understand that’s what drove this whole discussion—all of us want to make sure that that doesn’t happen again.” She went on to explain that background checks wouldn't have stopped Adam Lanza, and that she's working on legislation that puts an emphasis on mental health. Lafferty walked out when Ayotte went on to the next question. (More Kelly Ayotte stories.)
