If your first instinct is to cry "commercialism" at the news that Sean Collier, the MIT officer that was shot and killed after the Boston Marathon bombings, is being honored with a beer brewed in his name—and yours for just $5.50 a pint—know this: His loved ones tell the Boston Globe that Cambridge Brewing Company's planned "Collier Stout" is the most fitting of tributes. "I think Sean would be beside himself if he knew a beer was being named after him," said Collier's police academy classmate and longtime roommate.
The brother of an MIT police sergeant actually came up with the idea, and it's sort of sweet how they settled on a the style, a dry Irish stout: "Sean was a big, strong, stout kid," he notes, adding that stout also means "brave." That sergeant took the idea to Cambridge Brewing, while a fellow sergeant got the family's OK. It'll be ready in about a month, with $1 from each sale going to a memorial fund started in Collier’s honor. (More Boston stories.)
