Indonesia Plans Island Prison Guarded by Crocodiles

The Guardian reports the head of Indonesia's anti-drug agency has proposed an innovative new prison for drug convicts on death row: an island surrounded by blood-thirsty crocodiles. According to the Washington Post, the inmates would have food delivered to them on the island but would otherwise be left to fend for themselves. And lest you think his plan is crazy, the Guardian reports Indonesia's anti-drug chief, Budi Waseso, has some rock-solid logic behind it. “You can’t bribe crocodiles," he told a local news outlet. In a follow-up interview, he insisted he wasn't joking and said he would scour the country for his crocodile guards. “We will place as many crocodiles as we can there. I will search for the most ferocious type of crocodile."

OK, so it may be a crazy plan, but the Post notes it's "a signal of how far Indonesia is willing to go in its fight against the drug trade." The Guardian reports drug traffickers in Indonesia are subject to death by firing squad. And Waseso calls them the "mass murderers" of the future, according to the Post. The Guardian reports drugs are rampant in Indonesia's corrupt prison system, with both inmates and jail officials regularly being arrest on narcotics offenses. Indonesian president Joko Widodo calls drugs a "national emergency" and says harsh punishments are necessary, which we guess includes living in Captain Hook's personal nightmare.
