Jerich Marco Alcantara missed his graduation from New York City's Hunter College nursing school Tuesday when he got caught in a two-hour delay on the subway—but he got the next best thing when his fellow New Yorkers staged a graduation ceremony for him on the stalled train, Digg reports. The ceremony, filmed by fellow passengers and posted on social media, began when Alcantara—who was wearing his cap and gown—noticed how frustrated everyone seemed at the delay, which was caused by an emergency brake failure.

"Everyone seemed annoyed, and by that time, my commencement was already about an hour in," he tells ABC 7. "So I felt like lightening the mood and thanked everyone for 'coming to my graduation.' Told them it meant a lot to me, and they applauded it." From there, the ceremony commenced, complete with handshakes, hugs, applause, someone playing Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" on their phone, and even a "diploma," of which ABC 7 has a photo. Alcantara even offered to share the diploma with anyone who wanted a copy on their phone, via AirDrop, New York reports. (More uplifting news stories.)
