A Washington state man allegedly hired two teenagers to kill his ex-wife after his assault of her landed him in prison. The teens instead killed the woman's 24-year-old newlywed sister, who was babysitting, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office. Charges were laid Monday against 31-year-old Kevin Lewis; his cousin Jerradon Phelps, aged 19 or 20; and a 17-year-old Spokane girl, per ABC News and Fox News. Police say Lewis paid $2,400 to the younger suspects, who were 18 and 16 when they drove to the Everett home of Amanda Canales. As she was out of town, it was Alisha Canales-McGuire who answered the door at 1:55am on September 20, 2017, per the Everett Herald. Shots were fired and Canales-McGuire—who'd been watching her sister and brother-in-law's three children along with a nanny, per KOMO News—fell where she stood.

"Cell phone records put the phones of both suspects at locations consistent with traveling together and with the timing of the murder," reads a police statement. Investigators also say a social media post by the male showed off "several hundred dollar bills just a few hours after the murder." The caption read in part, "Never guess what I did 4 this check," per the Herald. But the big break came last summer when a tipster described the female suspect boasting of being a hired killer at a social gathering, reports Fox. All three suspects face charges of first-degree aggravated murder and first-degree conspiracy to commit murder. Lewis is also charged with solicitation to commit murder. Canales, who describes a "horrible" marriage, finds solace in the world getting to know "the real Kevin," she says. "Even I didn't know how far he'd go until it happened." (More murder stories.)
