The shooter who opened fire at a high school in Iowa Thursday morning is dead of what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, reports CNN and the AP. It remains unclear how many people were shot at Perry High School. Earlier, Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante said there were multiple victims, but he did not specify the number or the severity of their injuries, reports CNN. Two gunshot victims were taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, about 40 miles away, and other injured people were taken to a different Des Moines hospital, per the AP. The Des Moines Register talks to two teachers who say principal Dan Marburger was shot.

The shootings took place before classes began on the first day back at school for students following the holiday break. High school senior Ava Augustus tells the AP she was in a counselor's office when she heard gunshots, which prompted her and others to begin barricading the door. "And then we hear 'He's down. You can go out,'" she recalls. "And I run and you can just see glass everywhere, blood on the floor. I get to my car and they're taking a girl out of the auditorium who had been shot in her leg."

"New year, same horror," said Kris Brown, president of the Brady organization that works to prevent gun violence. "These students were returning to campus after their holiday break only to be met with gun violence that has uniquely plagued their generation." Linda Andorf, board president for the district, called news of the shooting "horrendously awful," per NBC News. "People need to figure out their life. This is just disgusting. It's terrible." This summary was updated with new details throughout. (More school shooting stories.)
