6-Year-Old Suspended for Bringing Nerf Gun to School

There was no mistaking Anthony Saenz's neon orange and yellow Nerf gun for a real one, but the 6-year-old found himself under fire all the same. After whipping it out on Denver's McGlone Elementary playground in an attempt to play cops and robbers, the kindergarten student was suspended for a day. "He's just a kid. He doesn't know any better," says his mother. "I think they should have just talked to him about it and say, 'Hey, you know you're not supposed to bring any toys to school.'"

The principal says she was just sticking to Denver Public Schools' discipline policy. However, that policy was changed last year from a "zero tolerance" one requiring suspension or expulsion to one that gives school districts the ability to make their own decisions about which incidents necessitate punishment, reports NBC 9 Colorado.
