More details have emerged about Kermit Gosnell's squalid Philadelphia abortion clinic, which operated for years despite dangerous and unhygienic conditions, at least 15 malpractice lawsuits, and complaints dating back to 1983:

  • One of the unlicensed workers at the clinic was the 15-year-old daughter of the clinic's office manager. The teen came after school to administer anesthesia and assist with abortions.
  • When induced labor began, the women would be told to sit on a toilet and wait for the fetus to drop. It would later be fished out, so the plumbing would not clog.

  • One 38-year-old woman's uterus was punctured and she had to go to a hospital for an emergency hysterectomy. Gosnell offered her $500 in compensation.
  • A 21-year-old woman tried to change her mind about getting an abortion, but says she was tied down, drugged, and forced to have the procedure.
  • A 20-year-old woman was sent home unaware she had remains of her fetus still inside of her. She developed an infection and required emergency surgery.
  • Fetal remains were kept in the same refrigerator as staff lunches.
  • Gosnell earned at least $1.8 million a year, much of it in cash.
  • Gosnell was certified in family practice, but never finished an obstetrics/gynecology residency.
  • Gosnell ranked third in Pennsylvania for the number of prescriptions he wrote for OxyContin, the highly addictive narcotic painkiller.
