Sen. John McCain slipped up yesterday on This Week when he claimed that iPads and iPhones are built in the good old US of A. McCain was talking about the importance of free trade agreements when he made the error, noting that “it's obviously a recognition of the reality and the trends, that cheaper, lower-cost labor products will usually prevail over products made in higher wage and income countries” before saying, “I would also point out that … an iPad or an iPhone, those are built in the United States of America.”

Actually, as those particular products say on their boxes, they are “Designed by Apple in California” but “Assembled in China.” McCain went on to close his case, saying that he agrees with President Obama that “innovation is the key to us being able to restore our economy. And that's got to be exports. We've got to have free trade agreements.” When questioned by CNN about the mistake, McCain’s office said the senator “is aware they were designed but not assembled in the US.” (More Made in America stories.)
