At least seven people were killed and another 15 wounded today when a man opened fire with a machine gun at a crowded mall in an Amsterdam suburb, the AP reports. The gunman, who witnesses describe as a blond haired man around 25-years-old, was found lying dead in front of a grocery store, having turned the gun on himself. "There was glass everywhere," says the man who found him. "He was just shooting everywhere as if it were the Wild West.
Local TV spotted a bomb squad searching a car believed to belong to the shooter. Several other malls in the town of Alphen aan den Rijn were evacuated as well, though the mayor wouldn't say why. He added that children were among the shooter's victims, though he couldn't say if they were killed or only injured. Town residents were understandably distraught."You hear about this sort of thing happening at American schools, and you think that's a long way away," said one. "Now it's happened here in the Netherlands." (More Amsterdam stories.)
