Casey Anthony Deemed Competent to Resume Trial

Casey Anthony's murder trial resumed today after being abruptly halted Saturday, the Orlando Sentinel reports. Anthony's attorneys filed a motion over the weekend stating that their client "is not competent to aid and assist in her own defense and is incompetent to proceed." But after an evaluation ordered by Chief Judge Belvin Perry, Anthony was deemed competent.

As the trial resumed today, a detective returned to the stand to acknowledge that he incorrectly testified last week that he subpoenaed cell phone records from the man who found Caylee Anthony's remains from July through December of 2008. He actually only subpoenaed them during June and early July, he said today. Meanwhile, sources tell the Sentinel the defense filed a mistrial motion, which could be based on a ruling last week that Florida uses an unconstitutional process to impose the death penalty.
