The FBI is looking into allegations that would bring Rupert Murdoch's phone hacking scandal in the UK much closer to home: Whether reporters for the now-shuttered News of the World tabloid tried to hack into the voicemails of 9/11 victims and their families. The AP quotes an anonymous source confirming the inquiry, which follows demands from lawmakers such as Rep. Peter King for just such an investigation, notes Business Insider.

Reports surfaced earlier this week that News Corp employees tried to pay a New York City cop for access to phone records of British victims in the attacks. It's not clear whether the FBI investigation focuses on that or is broader in scope. The FBI's New York office didn't immediately comment today. (More News Corp stories.)
