Arab League Gives Syria 3 Days

The Arab League has given Syria three more days to implement its peace plan, offering to send monitors to the country to ensure the bloodshed has stopped, in what amounts to a temporary reprieve from Saturday’s decision to suspend the country. But Qatar’s foreign minister insisted that sanctions would be imposed if the new deadline wasn’t met. “We should stop wasting time while people are getting killed,” he said, according to the New York Times.

Syria hasn’t responded, and Bashar al-Assad refused to send a representative to the meeting. The move comes as Germany, France, and Britain are working on a UN General Assembly resolution backing the Arab League’s demands. Meanwhile in Yemen, protesters took to the streets yesterday to urge the League to suspend their country as well, the AFP reports. They also denounced a plan that would grant immunity to President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
