Hundreds of women took to the streets of Cairo today in a protest of violence against female protesters, and military rule in general, following a speech from Hillary Clinton denouncing much the same things, the Guardian reports. “Egyptian women are a red line,” they chanted. A few dozen men joined the protest in solidarity. The protest comes in the wake of a video showing Egyptian troops dragging a woman along the ground and then beating her.
Clinton denounced the violence toward women in stark terms in a speech at Georgetown today. “This systematic degradation of Egyptian women dishonors the revolution, disgraces the state and its uniform, and is not worthy of a great people,” she said, decrying a “deeply troubling pattern” of women being marginalized in decision-making, according to the Telegraph. The protest also followed a new spate of violence in Tahrir Square, as soldiers fired live rounds in their effort to clear out demonstrators. (More Egypt stories.)
