With his repeated attacks on gay marriage and gay rights in general, Rick Santorum is "an unexpected revival of ... uncompassionate conservatism," writes Maureen Dowd in the New York Times. "Rick Perry baits gays because it’s good politics; Santorum sincerely means it," Dowd writes. "His political philosophy is infused with his über-Catholicism, but lacks humanity."
Santorum was roundly booed by students for comparing gay marriage to polygamy on Thursday and for further attacks on gay rights on Friday, and Dowd called the comparison "a masterpiece of antediluvian abrasiveness—slapping gays and Mormons at the same time." And despite Santorum's hot attacks on "European" style socialism and spending, Dowd notes that he has happily pushed for Medicare and other programs when he or his constituencies have stood to benefit. "Santorum’s hot politics of aggrievement have competed with Mitt Romney’s cold politics of convenience. But soon Santorum will be gone and Mittens will reign as the calculating consultant type," Dowd concludes. (More Rick Santorum stories.)
