Mitt Romney offered an apology of sorts this morning for the forcible haircut he allegedly gave a classmate in high school. "Back in high school, I did some dumb things, and if anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize," he said in a hastily arranged radio interview, according to the Washington Post. "I participated in lots of hijinks and pranks … and some might have gone too far." He added that in that incident, and another in which he allegedly yelled "Atta girl!" at a closeted student during class, "the people didn't come out of the closet until years later."
But Romney said he didn't recall the specific incident the Post was referring to. "I certainly don't believe that I thought that fellow was homosexual. That was the furthest thing from our minds back in the 1960s." In any case, Romney insists he has changed in the decades since. "At some point this campaign we'll talk about things like economy, energy, labor policy," he quipped, according to Business Insider. "I'm hoping the mainstream media will get around to it."
