Churchill's Granddaughter Dies

Arabella Churchill, the bohemian granddaughter of Winston who founded both a rock concert and a charity, has died of pancreatic cancer at age 58, the Telegraph reports. Arabella was said to have been Winston's favorite grandchild, but she found the famous name to be a mixed blessing. "I'm immensely proud of my grandfather...but I was no good at being a Churchill," she said in June.

At various points in the '70s, Arabella lived in London as a squatter, established a charity to help disabled kids, co-founded the Glastonbury rock festival, and caused a family kerfuffle by dissing the arms race and snubbing a NATO invitation. "I felt I wanted to be a hippy. I didn't feel like the rest of my family," she said. On the day she died, son Nicholas Jake Barton received a 3-year jail sentence in Australia for his role in an ecstasy ring. (More Arabella Churchill stories.)
