A couple of Republicans on the Miami-Dade School Board are not happy with Michelle Obama's plan to hold a campaign event at one of their high schools tonight. The first lady plans to push voter registration and enlist residents to volunteer for President Obama's re-election campaign—and two school board members are calling it inappropriate. One is clamoring for the event to be canceled; another wants the board attorney, who says the event is legal, to reconsider.
"There's a difference between official visits to schools by elected leaders and events that are for the sole purpose of advancing the interests of a political campaign," Carlos Curbelo, who has worked as a GOP strategist, tells the Miami Herald. And in a statement, Renier Diaz de la Portilla—who is running for the state House—adds, "Our schools are places for learning, not places for politicking."
