Florida Is a 'Coin Toss'

Gallup's latest poll once again shows a dead heat between President Obama and Mitt Romney on the national stage, and the Tampa Bay Times says the same holds true in pivotal Florida. Obama's up 46-45 in the newspaper's survey, and even if Romney picks favorite son Marco Rubio as VP, it barely changes things—Romney goes up 46-45.

"A coin toss," says a pollster. "Typical Florida." The dead heat is worse for Romney than Obama, writes Adam C. Smith, because "it's virtually impossible for him to win the presidency without Florida's 29 electoral votes." To get them, he'll need to make inroads with the state's independent voters (they favor Obama by 5 points) and women (14).
