Tuxedo Stan has gone from a stray on the street to mayoral candidate in Halifax, Canada, the Huffington Post reports. The 3-year-old feline is actually banned from holding office thanks to municipal law, but that's OK because his platform is more about awareness of Halifax's stray cat problem, and any money he raises goes toward a "Spay Day" for low-income families. His mayoral campaign began after his Facebook page gained thousands of fans, making him an international star.
"We have an explosion of cats," Stan's owner, a retired vet, told CTV last week. "We have literally hundreds, thousands of cats living in the streets." Tuxedo Stan and his team want a city-sponsored cat care program that would include spaying and neutering. As the Huffington Post points out, Stan is in fine feline company: Another cat, Stubbs, has been honorary mayor of an Alaska town for 15 years, and Hank is running for Senate in Virginia.
