Hunters Shoot World's 'Most Famous' Wolf

A wolf described as "the most famous in the world" has been shot dead by hunters just outside the boundary of Yellowstone National Park, reports the New York Times. The alpha female known as 832F had become a tourist favorite over the last six years and the shooting, which came just a week before the start of Wyoming's first wolf trapping season, has led to calls for fresh limits on the killing of wolves.

The gray wolf was taken off the endangered species list last year, but conservationists warn that their numbers still aren't high enough to support hunting. 832F had been tracked by researchers for years and she was wearing a $4,000 collar with GPS tracking technology when she was shot. Researchers say the collar showed her and her pack only ventured outside the park's boundary for brief periods. Seven other wolves with the collars have been shot over the last few weeks.
