Who needs those overrated, underpaying MBAs? At the University of Arizona, you can now minor in hip-hop. The school, which has been offering courses on hip-hop since 2004, recently made the subject available as one of the concentrations of its Africana Studies program, the Los Angeles Times reports. "Hip-hop ... affects every single discipline and aspects of society," says the interim director of the wildly popular program, which he says isn't just an easy A.
The curriculum includes a focus on hip-hop's interaction with politics, marketing, and other areas. Other experts are excited about the new minor, too: The Music Department chair at Cornell, which is one of the leading universities studying hip-hop, says that "the idea of acknowledgment of the deep impact hip-hop has in many areas, across cultures" is "a very positive development."
