Politics | Elizabeth Colbert Busch Colbert's Sister a Step Closer to House Seat As Mark Sanford advances to runoff By Evann Gastaldo Posted Mar 20, 2013 6:06 AM CDT Copied Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert, shares a laugh with reporters after voting in Mount Pleasant, SC, on Tuesday, March 19, 2013. (AP Photo/Bruce Smith) Elizabeth Colbert Busch won the Democrats' special-election primary for South Carolina's 1st District yesterday, putting her one step closer to Congress. Brother Stephen Colbert's "Colbert Bump" or no, Roll Call says she "easily" beat opponent Ben Frasier, a "frequent candidate," winning 95% of the vote to his 5%. But, as a Democrat, she faces an uphill battle in the Republican district's general election May 7. As for who she'll face, it could be Mark Sanford. The disgraced former governor snagged first place yesterday, winning 37% of the vote in the GOP primary, the Hill reports, and he'll advance to a runoff election April 2. His opponent will be either attorney Curtis Bostic or South Carolina state Sen. Larry Grooms; the AP reports that Bostic looks to be in second place behind Sanford, but the race is so close that an automatic recount will take place this week.
