It's probably not the birthday he was hoping for: Prince Philip will turn 92 in the hospital on Monday following his admission yesterday to the London Clinic for an "exploratory operation following abdominal investigations," Buckingham Palace said in a somewhat vague statement. Though it's not clear what's ailing the aging prince, the Telegraph reports it isn't linked to last year's bladder infection or this 2011 issue; he could be in the hospital up to two weeks following today's procedure.
"His hospital trip was planned in advance. He was driven there by car, walked into the hospital," says one source. Others tell the Telegraph doctors spotted something during a routine health check and he wasn't in pain. Earlier yesterday he seemed entirely cheery, smiling and "telling jokes" at a garden party. One doctor guesses the prince is in for a "fairly major procedure" but adds, "Prince Philip is in very good health ... I am not expecting him to have any major complications."
