Many of the details surrounding the deal between six world powers and Tehran on the latter's nuclear program remain under wraps, but Iran President Hasan Rouhani sounds pretty happy. The "world powers surrendered to Iranian nation's will," says a tweet today under Rouhani's name, according to the Jerusalem Post. He struck a similar chord in a speech today in the province of Khuzestan, though the AP suggests Rouhani might be playing necessary political games to appease hardliners who think Iran gave up too much. President Obama is facing similar criticism of his own on Capitol Hill.
The interim deal takes effect on Monday, and only the broad strokes have been made public—Iran is making concessions on uranium enrichment in return for the easing of sanctions. The bigger goal is to get a longer-term deal in six months. Iran's top negotiator says many of the specifics are covered in a 30-page informal text "not yet publicly acknowledged by Western officials," reports the Los Angeles Times. The negotiator, Abbas Araqchi, told an Iranian news agency that Tehran will retain plenty of leeway on its nuclear program. "No facility will be closed, enrichment will continue, and qualitative and nuclear research will be expanded,” he said. “All research into a new generation of centrifuges will continue."
