Drought in Texas may have resolved a 35-year-old mystery. After a city worker in Granbury noticed a vehicle sticking out of the local lake, police pulled an old Chevy pickup out of the water and found a skeleton inside, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Though DNA tests must still confirm it, authorities are all but certain that the remains belong to Helen Holladay, who vanished 35 years ago after a fight with her abusive husband. The 45-year-old was officially declared dead in 1986, seven years after she went missing.
How she ended up in the water is unclear, but police don't think it was an accident and are handling it as a homicide investigation. However, the most likely suspect, husband Herman Holladay, died years ago. The night Helen disappeared, neighbors reported hearing a loud argument and seeing Helen take off in the truck with her husband in pursuit, reports MyFox DFW. “Early on in the investigation, the husband was looked at as a suspect but he was never charged with a crime,” says the local sheriff. “We never got any evidence to tie him to it.” Helen's daughter says she isn't shocked, "but it is saddening to find out this is what happened to her."
