Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of negligent killing—comparable to manslaughter, the New York Times notes—but the case isn't over: The next step is sentencing hearings, and they could last at least a week, the Times reports. With Pistorius facing anything from a fine to 15 years in prison, both the defense and prosecution say they'll bring multiple witnesses to the stand. Among witnesses for the defense is Pistorius' personal psychologist, who today called him "a broken man who lost everything."
Angry with himself, Pistorius has entered "a spiral of grief without resolution," says Lore Hartzenberg. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel counters that Pistorius may be a "broken man, but he is still alive. … He can still pursue his career and more." A state correctional officer suggested a penalty of thee years' house arrest and community service, which Nel dismissed as "shockingly inappropriate." The prosecutor also asked Pistorius about a new woman he has allegedly been dating, CNN reports. He suggested that Hartzenberg was "avoiding" answering questions on the topic, but the psychologist said she'd only heard about the woman in the media, the BBC reports.
