Birdman continued its roll today, squawking loudly into the Golden Globes race and flying away with a leading seven nominations in the announcement this morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press. Boyhood and The Imitation Game trailed with five nods apiece. Those two films led a best drama category that also included Foxcatcher, Selma, and The Theory of Everything. In the category of best picture, comedy or musical, Birdman was joined by St. Vincent, Grand Budapest Hotel, Into the Woods, and—in a surprise—the independent British film Pride. Notably shut out of the nominations was Unbroken.
One of the surprise winners of the day was Grand Budapest Hotel, which, along with its best picture nod, earned nominations for Ralph Fiennes as best actor and Wes Anderson for screenplay and director. Other best director nominees included Ava DuVernay for Selma, David Fincher for Gone Girl, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for Birdman, and Richard Linklater for Boyhood.
