The end of the line came in anticlimactic fashion for a teenage couple dubbed "Bonnie and Clyde" and wanted in a string of crimes. As NBC reports, Dalton Hayes, 18, and Cheyenne Phillips, 13, were arrested early today after police in Panama City Beach, Fla., found them sleeping in a stolen Toyota Tundra in the parking lot of a Kirkland's. "The vehicle was surrounded by law enforcement and both Hayes and Phillips were taken into custody without further incident," says the Greyson County Sheriff's office in a statement; authorities were acting on information from the US Marshal's Office that Hayes was in the area. He's currently cooling his heels in jail pending extradition to his native Kentucky, while Cheyenne is under supervision of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
The pair had been on the run for two weeks, are suspects in the thefts of three vehicles and various firearms, and spawned a search that stretched from Kentucky to Florida as officials described them as "increasingly brazen and dangerous." "I know Dalton, and he has a history of making bad, bad decisions," the sheriff in their hometown tells CNN. "I was the school resource officer before I was elected sheriff. Dalton is known to have disciplinary and defiance issues at the high school with authority." The couple face multiple felony charges; Hayes will also likely face custodial interference charges. He was out on bond for burglary charges when the pair went missing. (More Florida stories.)
