The father of a Palestinian toddler killed in a firebomb attack last week in the West Bank has died of his wounds from the same incident. In addition to the deaths of 18-month-old Ali Dawabsheh and his father Saed, the boy's 4-year-old brother and his mother remain seriously injured. In the pre-dawn attack on July 31, assailants believed to be Jewish extremists hurled firebombs into a bedroom of the Dawabsheh family's home in the village of Duma.
Israel's government condemned the attack and promised to get tougher on vigilantes who have been attacking Palestinians and their property. Several suspected Jewish extremists have been detained, but so far no one has been accused of involvement. Human rights groups on both sides have complained that Israel's authorities and its military have failed to protect Palestinians against such attacks. (More Israel stories.)
