Police say a 16-year-old boy who apparently didn't want to wake up for school Tuesday morning shot three of his family members in an East Nashville, Tenn., home. "There was a quarrel about getting up and getting ready for the day when (at some point) the 16-year-old ran to a closet, got a 9mm handgun and started firing," a local police spokesperson says, per the Tennessean. A relative had been trying to wake the boy up; the victims are his 67-year-old grandmother, who was shot twice, and his 12-year-old sister and 6-year-old nephew, both of whom were grazed by bullets. All are expected to recover.
The teen also tried to shoot his mother, police say, but she hid behind a couch; his 2-year-old sister was in the home but wasn't shot. The teen fled on foot and nearby schools were put on lockdown, but ultimately police found both the gun (which he apparently ditched at a nearby apartment) and the teen, who was walking nearby and refused to speak to domestic violence detectives. The boy, who has a non-violent arrest history, has been charged in juvenile court with four counts of attempted homicide and one count of reckless endangerment. (More shooting stories.)
