Politics / Donald Trump 2016 Mexican Prez: Donald Trump Reminds Me of Hitler, Mussolini President Enrique Pena Nieto issues a warning By Neal Colgrass, Newser Staff Posted Mar 7, 2016 5:00 PM CST Copied Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a news conference Saturday, March 5, 2016, in West Palm Beach, Fla. (AP Photo/Brynn Anderson) Glenn Beck and Louis CK aren't the only ones comparing Donald Trump to Hitler. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto today issued a warning about the Republican presidential front-runner, who has said Mexico will pay for a US border wall to keep out illegal immigrants, Reuters reports. "There is no scenario" in which Mexico will make such a payment, Nieto tells El Universal. He goes on: "And there have been episodes in human history, unfortunately, where these expressions of this strident rhetoric have only led to very ominous situations in the history of humanity. That's how Mussolini got in, that's how Hitler got in, they took advantage of a situation, a problem perhaps, which humanity was going through at the time, after an economic crisis. And I think what (they) put forward ended up at what we know today from history, in global conflagration. We don't want that happening anywhere in the world." Nieto says he will nonetheless try to deal respectfully with anyone who wins the US general election. But one analyst isn't impressed: "Why would you egg [Trump] on?" political science professor Federico Estévez asks the Guardian. "If you punch back … there you are aligned with the Democrats and you get nothing [in the bilateral relationship] as a result." (More Donald Trump 2016 stories.) Report an error
