Murder, AK-47s, "pimps and ho's"—topics you'd expect to see covered in a police report, not on a middle school math quiz. Yet a teacher in Mobile, Ala., included those subjects on her exam, and she's now been placed on administrative leave because of it, NBC News reports. JoAnne Bolser, a language arts teacher at Cranford Burns Middle School, handed out the 10-question quiz on Friday, and students were confronted with such numbers challenges as: "Tyrone knocked up 4 girls in the gang. There are 20 girls in his gang. What is the exact percentage of girls Tyrone knocked up?" The "City of Los Angeles High School Math Proficiency Exam" that Bolser handed out apparently started making the rounds online years ago—what WPMI describes as a "facetious" quiz designed to parody the crime in that area.
The school took action after the parents of one of the eighth-graders got wind of the quiz. "My son, he took a picture of it in class and he texted it to me," Erica Hall says. "I couldn't believe it." She and her husband headed up to the school demanding answers, and after an investigation, Bolser, who was about to retire this month, was placed on leave, a rep for the school says. The rep adds it's still unclear whether the school had officially reviewed the lesson plan including that quiz (or if Bolser had gone rogue), and that Hall and her husband were the only ones who registered a complaint. "I was shocked because she's a strict teacher," one student tells WPMI. (An Indiana eighth-grader refused to share her BMI for a school project.)
