UCLA Gunman Had 'Kill List,' Woman on It Is Dead

The gunman who shot a professor at UCLA on Wednesday is also suspected of killing a woman in Minnesota who was on what police are calling a "kill list," reports the Los Angeles Times. Police have identified the shooter as former PhD student Mainak Sarkar, 38. He had raged about UCLA professor William Klug online months before police say he shot Klug, then himself on Wednesday. In a since-deleted blog post (visible here), Sarkar wrote that Klug, his former adviser, had stolen his computer code and given it to another person. "He is a very sick person. I urge every new student coming to UCLA to stay away from this guy," Sarkar wrote of the 39-year-old father of two on March 10, per the Times and CNN.

"He made me really sick. Your enemy is my enemy. But your friend can do a lot more harm. Be careful about whom you trust." A university source says Sarkar's accusations are "psychotic" and "absolutely untrue," adding Klug "interceded for [Sarkar] academically" to help him graduate. Sarkar—who studied in India before earning a master's degree at Stanford, according to this LinkedIn page—even thanked Klug in his 2013 doctoral dissertation. Details are still emerging on the slaying in Minnesota, and Sarkar's connection to the woman was unclear. A second UCLA professor also was on the kill list, says LAPD spokesman Charlie Beck, but his identity wasn't released. (More school shooting stories.)
