Much of an early gain was gone by the end of trading on Wall Street Tuesday, leaving major indexes with meager gains, the AP reports. Energy stocks did far better than the rest of the market Tuesday as the price of oil closed above $50 a barrel for the first time in almost a year. Chevron jumped 2.1%, the biggest gain in the Dow Jones industrial average. A drop in bond yields sent phone companies higher. Verizon rose 2.1%. Several drug companies fell following disappointing results from clinical studies. Biogen slumped 12.8%. The Dow edged up 17 points, or 0.1%, to 17,938. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 2 points, or 0.1%, to 2,112. The Nasdaq composite slipped 6 points, or 0.1%, to 4,961. (More Dow Jones stories.)
