Opposition Rejects Recount in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s opposition leader today rejected a demand by President Robert Mugabe for a vote recount, the BBC reports. Morgan Tsvangirai, who has accused Mugabe of plotting a violence to maintain power, called a recount “illegal” and “impractical.” Meanwhile, a high court said it will rule tomorrow on whether election results must be released.

War veterans loyal to Mugabe sparked fears of nationwide violence today by invading several white-owned farms, as militants had done 8 years ago, Reuters reports. But police said they had moved in and stopped the invasions. Most of the country's 4,500 white farmers have been forced from their land since Mugabe began his land reforms in 2000.
