Celebrities rolled from the red carpet into Hollywood's Dolby Theatre Sunday night for the 89th annual Academy Awards, with Justin Timberlake greeting everyone with a peppy rendition of "Can't Stop This Feeling." Jimmy Kimmel then took the stage, noting, "This is my first time here. And the way you people go through hosts, it's probably my last time here." Kimmel said he wasn't the person to unite the country (though he did try to settle an old "feud" with Matt Damon), instead noting that the past year in movies had been an amazing one, one in which "black people saved NASA and white people saved jazz—that's what you call progress." And then the awards kicked off:
- Best Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali, Moonlight (Ali is the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar)
- Best Makeup and Hairstyling: Suicide Squad
- Best Costume Design: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
- Best Documentary Feature: OJ: Made in America
