Media / Jill Abramson Ex-NYT Editor: Trump Took Words 'Out of Context' Jill Abramson praises paper's 'superb coverage' after excerpt of her coming book leaks By Polly Davis Doig, Newser Staff Posted Jan 6, 2019 8:13 AM CST Copied Jill Abramson, former executive editor of The New York Times, receives an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree during the commencement ceremony Monday, May 19, 2014 at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. (AP Photo/Nell Redmond) Jill Abramson and President Trump appeared to be in unlikely agreement that the New York Times was running stories that "were unmistakably anti-Trump"—but very briefly, and now the former NYT executive editor is hitting back at coverage of her upcoming book, saying it was taken "totally out of context." "Donald Trump is echoing a piece on Fox News (surprise) that distorts ... what I wrote," she says, via the Guardian. "Both the NYT and [Washington Post] have had superb coverage of the corruption enveloping the Trump administration, the best investigative reporting I’ve seen." Trump had indeed retweeted the headlines, saying that "Ms Abramson is 100% correct. Horrible and totally dishonest reporting on almost everything they write. Hence the term[s] Fake News, Enemy of the People, and Opposition Party!" Abramson responded Saturday in a tweet directed at Trump that "Anyone who reads my book … will find I revere [the Times] and praise its tough coverage of you." Abramson's book, Merchants of Truth, is out February 5. The Daily Beast has a few other details, including a profane rant by her successor, Dean Baquet. (More Jill Abramson stories.) Report an error
