Like going to Utah's Antelope Island State Park? You might not see Kyler Bourgeous there anytime soon. The 30-year-old trail runner and cyclist was gored by a bison there this spring—then returned with a date there last Friday, and she got gored. "I swore a bit, because I was in disbelief," he tells the Washington Post. The Utah man's bad luck began June 1 when was climbing a trail to the park's highest point and found two adult bison up there. He tried hiding, but it was too late, and one of them charged, collapsing his lung with its horns and sending him airborne. Then it waited to see if he would move; he knew not to. Airlifted to a hospital, Bourgeous was lucky—no arteries punctured, no major blood loss—and went hiking again 11 days later.
Then he met 22-year-old Kayleigh Davis online and bonded with her over their enthusiasm for the outdoors. She was even headed to Antelope Island State Park to train for a half-marathon, so he joined her—and that's where, on a trail, she tried to avoid a bison. "That's when he flipped me up ... I was about 15 feet in the air," she tells KSL. Davis knew from Bourgeous' experience to keep still, and sure enough the bison stopped. Whisked away by helicopter, she had a punctured thigh and broken ankle. Now that she's out of the hospital, they plan to continue their new relationship as she hobbles on crutches and a walker. But return to Antelope Island State Park? "I generally am not superstitious," Bourgeous says, "but I have this weird feeling that the bison there really don't like me." (More bison stories.)
