A 17-year-old high school student was shot in a Wisconsin classroom Monday after police said he pointed a gun at them. The student was hospitalized and stable, police said later in the day. No one else was hurt at Waukesha South High School, which is in a suburb of Milwaukee, CNN reports. Officers had gone to the classroom after a classmate reported seeing him with a handgun; a school resource officer was the first to arrive. They tried to start a conversation with him, but police said he ignored them and wouldn't take his hands out of his pockets. He then pulled the gun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers, police said, and one of them fired. The other students in the room were evacuated, and the school went on lockdown.

One sophomore said he was with his Spanish teacher and classmates in a hallway, hanging posters, when "these kids start running out from the classroom directly across from us, and one of them goes 'he's got a gun.'" His teacher quickly got her students into a classroom, per the Journal Sentinel, "so we were in lockdown before they even announced it." About 20 minutes later, the student said they heard three gunshots that "shook the whole room." Another student said she and her classmates were hiding in corners with the lights off and the door locked, as they're told to do. They heard the shots, too. "They were right next to my classroom, so we all went into shock," she said. "Even my teacher hid with us." (More school shootings stories.)
