Billie Eilish had apparently never heard of Van Halen before Jimmy Kimmel brought up the iconic band during his interview of the singer, who is not quite 18, last month, and on Monday, Eddie Van Halen's son expressed his opinion on that. "If you haven’t heard of @billieeilish, go check her out. She’s cool. If you haven’t heard of @VanHalen, go check them out. They’re cool too," Wolfgang Van Halen, who plays bass in his dad's band, posted on Twitter. "Music is supposed to bring us together, not divide us. Listen to what you want and don’t shame others for not knowing what you like." As CNN explains, he posted it in response to the uproar over Eilish's apparent ignorance of the band, which prompted many to take to social media and declare their shock and dismay.
Seeing as Eilish was born in 2001, it makes sense that she's unaware of a number of iconic people and things from the '80s and '90s. During her appearance on Kimmel, he quizzed her on a number of those people and things, and in addition to her response of "Who?" when asked about Van Halen, she revealed she had never heard of Huey Lewis, Run DMC, or Cabbage Patch Kids, didn't know Mr. T's tagline, couldn't answer questions about Ghostbusters or Gremlins, and had never seen an episode of the Cosby Show. She did, however, know who Madonna and Cyndi Lauper were. As for reactions to Wolfgang Van Halen's tweet, many were supportive: "Exactly!" one person posted. "I've heard Billie say how her dad played a lot of music while she & her brother/co-writer/producer, Finneas, were younger. She mentions his love of the Beatles, hearing Sinatra, also newer music. Maybe their dad wasn't into harder rock/metal? They didn't have cable TV." (More Billie Eilish stories.)
