A North Carolina school resource officer caught on video slamming an 11-year-old student to the ground twice has lost his job and might lose his freedom. The Vance County Sheriff's Office tells CBS that the deputy has been fired and the incident last week is now being looked at by the state Bureau of Investigation. The video, which has no audio, shows the boy and the deputy walking down a hallway at Vance County Middle School in Henderson before the deputy suddenly picks the student up and slams him to the ground. The deputy slams the boy to the ground a second time before dragging him down the hall. Authorities say the student suffered minor injuries.
"When we first saw the video, we were stunned, we were shocked. We all are parents and grandparents that have children at that same age, so it brought some great concern to us," says Sheriff Curtis Brame. "I don't expect my deputy or any deputy or law enforcement in North Carolina to carry out their duties in that way." Vance County District Attorney Mike Waters says that while it's not clear what the boy might have said to the deputy, there is "no justification" for the violence. "This is just a stunning kind of incident," Waters tells ABC. "I don't see any justification at this point for that officer's behavior and action." He says a decision will made this week on whether to charge the deputy, who was fired on Monday. (More North Carolina stories.)
