New comics from The Far Side creator Gary Larson are indeed coming. The Far Side's official website, which previously teased a return of the single-panel comic retired in 1995, was updated Tuesday and again Wednesday to show a selection of past comics. According to a letter from Larson and an interview he did with the New York Times, the site will now be updated daily with past favorites, never-before-seen cartoons from Larson's sketchbooks, and—on occasion—brand-new material. The 69-year-old Larson isn't exactly coming out of retirement but hopes the website will help cut down on copyright infringement as his cartoons "have been taken and used to help sell everything from doughnuts to rodent control," he wrote in his letter.
"Trying to exert some control over my cartoons has always been an uphill slog, and I've sometimes wondered if my absence from the web may have inadvertently fueled someone's belief my cartoons were up for grabs. They're not," he continues in the letter, asking the "infringement-inclined" to "taketh down my cartoons and let this website become your place to stop by for a smile, a laugh, or a good ol' fashioned recoiling. And I won't have to release the Krakencow." Larson, who now draws on a tablet, tells the Times that he'll be "slipping in some new things every so often." Just don't expect too much. "Returning to the world of deadlines isn't exactly on my to-do list," he says. (More comics stories.)
