A lighthouse that once stood on a Cape Cod beach but was long thought destroyed has been found on a California cliff 3,000 miles away, the Cape Cod Times reports. The cast-iron lighthouse overlooked Wellfleet Harbor until 1925 when it was taken down and, locals thought, dismantled. Instead, an enthusiast examining old photos discovered that the Coast Guard moved it cross-country. It was the first to employ a female lightkeeper.
"The story has always been that that little 30-foot lighthouse in Wellfleet was taken down and destroyed," said a lighthouse expert. "Here we are 80 some odd years later and it's been discovered. I think it's fantastic that it's not lost and gone." (More lighthouse stories.)
