Rummy Fired General for Truthful Report on Abu Ghraib Prison

Shortly after the mistreatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq became public Major General Antonio M. Taguba was tasked by the Army with investigating and reporting on the situation. He found "Numerous incidents of sadistic, blatant, and wanton criminal abuses were inflicted on several detainees . . . systemic and illegal abuse."  For his trouble he was fired.

Taguba believes that the abuses were known at the very highest levels of command and  by the civilian leadership of DoD. None of these senior officials were disciplined.  Taguba tells Seymour Hersh at the New Yorker, "the fact is that we violated the laws of land warfare in Abu Ghraib. We violated the tenets of the Geneva Convention."
