The hot dogs fans scarf down during tonight’s All-Star Game will be thoroughly cooked, foil-wrapped affairs. They will come from "spotless, industrial kitchens" and "will cost a small fortune." In other words, they won’t be anything like the franks New York Times contributor Doug Kriegel hawked at Ebbets Field in the '50s—but somehow, they remind him of them anyway.
Ebbets Field is gone, and soon, Yankee Stadium will be too. Although both the Dodgers and their home "have faded from New York memory, they’re alive for me," Kriegel writes. "And when I watch tonight’s game on TV from the West Coast, I’m sure I’ll catch myself looking in the stands, searching for the hot dog vendors." (More baseball stories.)
