If you've been seeing lots of images of a certain Italian plumber all day, there's a reason: It's Mario Day, kind of like the gamers' version of May 4 for Star Wars fans. Mario Day is celebrated on March 10, as in M-A-R-1-O, notes Variety. As Mariowiki recounts, fan invented the day about a decade ago, but since then it has been fully embraced by both Nintendo and retailers that sell Mario goods.

  • CNET, for example, has a remarkably long list of deals on games, consoles, and merchandise of every kind celebrating what it calls the "world's most recognizable video game mascot."
  • GameSpot, meanwhile, is focusing on a new 1,972-piece Lego kit of Mario and his familiar red racing cart that runs $170.
  • KCCI even has video of a Kentucky teen playing the third installment of Super Mario Bros, released in February 1990.
  • Hard-core fans may want to check out a Reddit forum in which fans pick their favorite Mario game over the years.
