An Ohio mother who burned her month-old baby alive in a microwave oven was sentenced yesterday to life without parole. The jury could not agree on imposing the death penalty, reports the Dayton Daily News. China Arnold, 28, was not present for the emotionally charged hearing, and instead watched the proceedings on a closed-circuit TV in another room.

The judge described the murder of baby Paris as "beyond all human and moral comprehension." Arnold's attorney pleaded for life with the possibiity of parole after 25 years, saying the mom was sorry for what she had done. But the prosecutor said: "There is no genuine remorse here. The only remorse is that she got caught." (More China Arnold stories.)
